File Menu

The file menu contains items for working with your portfolios, printing, and exiting the program. The commands available on the File menu will be discussed in this section.

Create Portfolio

This command allows you to create a new portfolio of symbols on your system. Depending on which file format you choose to create the new portfolio in, it will be able to hold from 255 (old Metastock format) to 2000 symbols. After selecting this command the following window will appear:

From the list, select the format you would like your data stored in, and then press the OK button. After doing this the following window will appear:

Type in a new directory name in the Directory Name box, or, select an existing directory from the Directories list. Press OK when you are finished and the new portfolio will be created and displayed. You can now enter symbols into this new portfolio.

Delete Portfolio

This command deletes the portfolio that is currently highlighted in the Portfolios window. After this command is selected, a window will ask for confirmation that you really want to do this. Press the Yes button and the portfolio will be deleted.

Ignore Portfolio

There may be times when you do not want a portfolio to be updated by Quote Monkey Deluxe. If this is the case, highlight the portfolio in the Portfolios window and select this menu item. The portfolio name will turn red and be enclosed by brackets in the Portfolios window. Quote Monkey Deluxe will no longer update this portfolio when it retrieves quotes. To un-ignore a portfolio (start updating it again) perform the same steps as above. Quote MonkeyDeluxe will once again update the portfolio, and, in the Portfolios window, its’ name will turn black and the brackets will be removed.

Scan Portfolios

If you create a portfolio in another program such as MetaStock, Quote MonkeyDeluxe may not know how to find it. Use this menu item to tell Quote Monkey Deluxe to scan your system and find any new portfolios you have added. Please note that this step is not necessary if the portfolio was created by Quote Monkey, Quote Monkey Deluxe, or any future Primate program. Use this feature to have QMD recoqnize portfolios from other programs with MS data.

Print Setup

This item allows you to determine how a chart will be printed, and which printer and printer settings Quote Monkey Deluxe will use for all printing. Upon selecting this item you will be presented with the following window:

The Study Line Width setting determines how wide the lines on the chart are printed. The default of 5 usually works pretty well with most 300dpi printers. If your printer has a higher resolution you may want to increase this setting. You can change this setting by clicking the arrows to increase or decrease the number.

If you have a color printer, and would like your charts printed in color, then check the Use Color box. Checking this box with a black and white printer will cause to chart to print in shades of gray.

If you would like to choose which printer to use, or change the current printer’s settings, then click on the Printer button. This will bring up a Print window. This window varies according to your printer. See the documentation that came with your printer for help on this window.

Print

This item allows you to print various items with Quote MonkeyDeluxe. When you select this item the following sub-menu will appear:

These selections are as follows:

Enter the date range you want to print using the From Date and To Date fields and then press the OK button.

Click on the Current Portfolio button to print the data only for the portfolio highlighted in the Portfolios window. Click on All Portfolios to print the selected day’s data for all of the symbols that you follow.

Type in the date that you want to print in the Date field. This entry defaults to today’s date. Optionally, you can click on the button next to the date and be presented with a calendar window from which you can select the date.

Click on the OK button to begin printing.

Exit

This item closes the Quote Monkey Deluxe program.

Symbol Menu

The symbol menu contains items for working with the symbols within the current portfolio. With the items on this menu you can add new symbols, edit, delete, move, copy, or find an existing symbol. The commands available on the symbol menu will be discussed in this section.

Add

This command allows you to add a new symbol to the current portfolio. You will see the following window after selecting the Add command:

Type in the symbol that you want to follow in the Symbol field. Your entry will automatically be converted to capital letters as you type.

Click on the amount of historical data desired using the year buttons. If you want an odd amount of data, or more than 10 years, click on the Other button. Please note that you can select any amount of historical data you want, but you will not be able to get more than what is available in Primates’ database.

Press the OK button to enter the new symbol. If you selected the Other button for the historical data amount, the following window will appear:

Type in the date that you want the historical data to start on, or, click on the button next to the date field and select the desired date from the calendar that appears.

Edit

This command is used to edit an existing symbol, change the name, or alter the amount of historical data for the symbol. Highlight the symbol that you want to edit in the Symbols window then select this command. After doing this you will see the following window:

If you want to change the symbol itself, type in the new symbol in the Symbol field.

To change the symbol’s name, type the new one in the Name field.

To keep the current amount of historical data you have, make sure the Don’t Change button is selected. Otherwise, select the new amount of historical data you want using the buttons in the Historical Data area (see the Symbol | Add section for the use of the Other button). If you select more historical data than you currently have, Quote MonkeyDeluxe will retrieve the difference on the next update.

Note: If you select less, it will delete the excess after you confirm this. Be sure that you want to lose this data.

Press the OK button to enter your changes.

Delete

Use this command when you want to delete the current symbol. The program will ask you for confirmation of the deletion. Press the Yes button and the symbol will be deleted.

Move To

If you want to move a symbol to another portfolio, this is the command to use. After selecting this command the program will examine all of your other portfolios to determine which ones are able to accept the symbol. After doing this the following window will appear:

The first column in the grid lists all of your portfolios. The second column shows the file format of each portfolio. The third column lists the status of each portfolio. You can move the symbol into any portfolio that is not listed in red. The portfolio that the symbol is currently in will always be listed in red as there is no need to move the symbol to where it already is.

To move the symbol, click on the destination portfolio, and then click on the OK button. Once the symbol and it’s data have transferred to the destination portfolio, it will be deleted from the current portfolio.

Copy To

The Copy To command performs the same function as the Move To command except that the symbol is not deleted from the source portfolio after it is copied to the destination portfolio. See the Move To command above for instructions on how to use this command.

Find

If you’ve lost a symbol, but you know it’s in one of your portfolios, use this command to locate it. After selecting this command you will see the following window:

Type in the symbol you’re looking for in the Symbol To Find field. If you know the symbol is in the current portfolio then click on the Current Portfolio button. If you have no idea where the symbol is located, then click the All Portfolios button. Now click on the OK button.

If you selected Current Portfolio, and the symbol is in the current portfolio, Quote Monkey Deluxe will immediately bring up the symbol. Otherwise, it will notify you that symbol is not in the current portfolio.

If you selected All Portfolios, and Quote MonkeyDeluxe found the symbol in at least one portfolio, it will show you the following window:

Select the portfolio you want to look at and then press the OK button. Quote Monkey Deluxe will take you to the symbol in the portfolio you selected.

Quotes Menu

The quotes menu contains commands for updating your portfolios, and manipulating the data for the current symbol. The commands available on the quotes menu are discussed in this section.

Retrieve

This command updates your portfolios by calling into Primate through your modem to retrieve quotes. You must have an account with Primate to use this command. Once you select Retrieve you will see the following screen throughout the retrieval process:

This window consists of the following elements:

Once the retrieval is complete, any high priority mail from Primate will be displayed on the screen. Press the OK button on each message window to advance to the next one. If you have a sound card in your computer you will also be notified vocally if you have any personal e-mail from Primate waiting in your incoming messages.

Delete

This command is used to delete quotes. Unless the current portfolio is ignored, these quotes will be retrieved again on the next download. When you select this command the following window will appear:

The date of the current quote appears at the top of the window. If you want to delete the data from the selected date up until the most recent quote, click on the first button in the Direction box. If you want to delete the data from the selected date back to the first quote that you have (the beginning of your historical data) select the second button. After pressing to OK button you will have to confirm the deletion. Press the Yes button and the data will be deleted.

Edit

If you need to change any of the values of a quote use this command. After you select this item the following window will appear:

Type in the corrected information in the appropriate field. The arrow buttons perform the following functions (from left to right):

You can use these buttons to navigate through your quotes, making any needed changes along the way. When you are finished editing your quotes press the OK button.

Split

This command is used to adjust for any splits you may find in your data. To adjust your data, select the split date in the quote window, then select this command from the Quotes menu. The following window will appear:

If you didn’t select the correct date before selecting the Split command you can change the date in the Split Date field. Enter the number of new shares (the left side of the ratio) in the New Shares field, and the number of old shares (the right side of the ratio) in the Old Shares field. Press the OK button to perform the split.

Example - Stock XYZ closed at 60 on 11/20 and at 30 on 11/21. This would indicate a 2:1 split on the 21st. To perform this split do the following:

  1. Highlight the row containing the data for 11/21 in the Quote Window.
  2. Select the Split command from the Quotes menu.
  3. Enter the number 2 in the New Shares field.
  4. Enter the number 1 in the Old Shares field.
  5. Press the OK button.
If you make a mistake you can repeat the above process, reversing the Shares fields, and the data will return to it’s former values.

Disbursement

This command is used to adjust your mutual fund data when the fund pays a disbursement or distribution. To adjust your data, select the date of the disbursement in the quote window, then select this command from the Quotes menu. The following window will appear:

If you didn’t select the correct date before selecting the Disbursement command you can change the date in the Disbursement Date field. Enter the amount of the disbursement in the Disbursement Amount field. Press the OK button to perform the disbursement.

Adjust

Sometimes the historical data from your old data service will not match Primate’s data. This usually happens by a multiple of ten and usually on currency futures. You can use the Adjust command to multiply your old data to match the new. To do this, select the Adjust command from the Quotes menu. The following window will appear:

In the From Date field enter the first date of your historical data. In the To Date field enter the last date of historical data from your previous vendor. In the Price and Volume Multiplier fields enter the number to multiply the old data by to make it compatible with Primate’s data. For example, if your old data service ended on 10/31 and you started Primate on 11/1 your may have the following quotes for the Japanese Yen:

10/31 0.0088 (Old vendor’s quote)

11/01 88.7400 (Primate’s quote)

In this example you would enter 10000 in the Price Multiplier field and leave the Volume Multiplier at 1. If you need to divide by a multiple of 10, just use a decimal number. For example, if the numbers above were reversed, then the Price Multiplier would be .0001.

Chart Menu

The Chart menu contains commands for changing the display on the chart window and for viewing windows that make displaying the data from your chart easier. The commands on the Chart menu are explained in the following section.

Zoom In

The Zoom In command is used to display less data on the chart, enabling you to see more detail of the individual data points. Each time you use this command the chart is zoomed by a factor of 2.

Zoom Out

The Zoom Out command is used to display more data on the chart, enabling you to see the big picture and spot trends. Each time you use this command the chart is zoomed by a factor of 2.

Show Data / Hide Data

This command either shows or hides the chart data window depending on the current state of the window. The chart data window shows the data for every plot on a chart for any selected day and looks like the figure below.

When this window is on the screen, clicking on the chart will show the data for all of the plots on the selected day. This window will always stay on top of all the other windows in Quote Monkey Deluxe no matter where it is moved.

Show Mouse Location / Hide Mouse Location

This command either shows or hides the chart mouse location window depending on the current state of the window. The chart mouse location window shows where on the chart the mouse is currently pointing to. As you move the mouse pointer over the chart this window shows what date the pointer is over, and what position along the price axis the mouse is at. The mouse location window is shown below.

This window will always stay on top of all the other windows in Quote MonkeyDeluxe no matter where it is moved.

Note: If you have used Chart Monkey in the past, this window corresponds to the position information shown in the status bar of the Chart Monkey window.

Studies

This item allows you to work with the studies on the chart window. Please note that the individual studies are discussed in detail in another section of this manual. When you select this item the following sub-menu will appear:

These selections are as follows:

Select the study you want to add from the Study list. Select which pane of the chart you want the study placed in from the Pane list. If you want the study to go into it’s own pane then select the (New Pane) item.

Note: When you select a study from the list the Pane list will select a compatible scale by default. You can override this and place the study into any pane you want. However, if you place the study into a pane that has an incompatible scale, the chart may be hard to read.

When you are finished selecting the study and the pane click on the Apply button. A window will appear asking you for any parameters that the study requires. These windows are different for each study and will be discussed in more detail in another section of this manual. The study will be added to the chart window in the background and the Add Study window will stay on the screen. You may continue adding studies to the chart by selecting another study, the pane in which to place it, and clicking on the Apply button. When you are finished adding studies to the chart, click on the Close button. The Add Study window will close.

The Study list shows each study that is currently on the chart, and in brackets, which pane the study is in. Select the study you want to change and click on the OK button. After doing this the parameters window for that type of study will appear. These windows are different for each type of study and are discussed in another section of this manual. After changing the parameters for the study click on the OK button and the chart will update to reflect your changes.
Select the study to be removed from the Study list and then press the OK button. The selected study will be removed from the chart. If the selected study was the only study in it’s pane then the pane will be removed as well.

Trade Ledger

The Trade Ledger lets you keep track of any open positions that you have. When you select this command you will see a window like the following below:

Most of this window is taken up by the ledger itself. The ledger has 10 pages denoted by tabs on the bottom of the page. To select a page click on it’s tab. To scroll through the tabs use the arrows located at the right of the row of tabs. The largest portion of the page is taken up by the trades grid. The grid has the following columns:

Each row in the grid is color coded as to the profitability of the position. Green indicates a profit, red a loss, blue is unchanged. If the row is gray then the ledger has lost the data connection to the underlying symbol. This can be caused by editing the symbol, deleting the symbol, or deleting the portfolio that the symbol is in.

Across the bottom of the page is an area that summarizes the whole page and has the following items:

Across the bottom of the window are buttons that you use to manipulate the ledger. These buttons perform the following functions:
In order to add a new position you must be following the symbol in one of your portfolios. Select the portfolio that the symbol is in, using the first list in the Symbol section. After doing this select the symbol from the second list in the Symbol section. For a long position, enter the number of units (shares, contracts, etc.) purchased in the Quantity field, the price per unit in the Purchase Price field, and click on the Long button in the Position box. For a short position, enter the number of units (shares, contracts, etc.) sold in the Quantity field, the selling price per unit in the Purchase Price field, and click on the Short button in the Position box. Click on the OK button to enter the new position into the ledger.

The Symbol field show the symbol of the currently selected position of the ledger. The Quantity field automatically defaults to all of the shares, contracts, etc. in the position. Enter the number of units (shares, contracts, etc.) sold (for a long position) or bought (for a short position) in the Quantity field. Press the OK button. If you entered all of the units in the Quantity field then the position will be removed from the ledger. Otherwise the quantity of the position will adjusted by the amount entered.

Enter the name you would like to give the page in the Page Name field. This field defaults to the current name of the page. Press the OK button when you are done and the new name will be placed on the current page’s tab.

The Slide Show command brings up a control panel that allows you to view all of your symbols, charts, and data in an automated fashion. When you select this command the following window appears:

The window functions much like a VCR. The black area on the left is the status area. It has a mode indicator (rewind, reverse, play, fast forward, stop), a symbol counter, and a play speed indicator. The buttons from left to right are:

Default Layout

This command returns all of the Quote Monkey Deluxe windows back to their default positions. This is the layout that the program was in the very first time you ran it.

Settings Menu

The Settings menu contains commands for changing various program options and setting up your data link with Primate. The commands available on the Settings menu will be discussed in this section.

Note: All Primate programs use the same settings. If you also own Quote Monkey and / or Chart Monkey, making a change to the settings in Quote Monkey Deluxe will also affect the other programs and vice versa.

Modem

The Modem command is used to setup your data link with Primate software.

Note: If you previously used Quote Monkey to download quotes, and everything worked OK, then you do not need to change these settings for Quote Monkey Deluxe.

Once you select this command the following window will appear:

In the COM Port section, select which COM port your modem is attached to. In the Baud Rate section, select the speed that most closely matches your modem’s speed. If you have a modem that is faster than 28.8kbps then select 28800. If your modem is slower than 9600 you will have to upgrade your modem to use Primate’s service. The Phone Number field should already have the correct number to Primate’s service and should not need changed. In the Password field, type the password given to you by Primate. This is usually located on the cover letter you received when you first joined Primate’s service. Most people will not need to enter anything in the Modem Setup String field. If you are having problems with your modem connection you can try one of the following strings in this field:

&F &D2 &C1 \N3 S7=60

&F &C1 &D2 Q0 V1

When you are finished entering your settings press the OK button.

Drives

By default all Primate programs only search drive C to display and update data. If you have data on other drives on your system you need to use this command to let Quote Monkey Deluxe know that it exists. After selecting this command you will see a window similar to the following:

In the example window above, drive C is selected as a recognized data drive. Drives that you want Quote Monkey Deluxe to recognize should have their buttons "pushed in". Drives that Quote Monkey Deluxe should ignore should not have their buttons "pushed in". To toggle the state of one of the drive buttons simply click on it with your mouse. When you are finished changing your drive selections press the OK button. Help Menu

The Help menu contains a single command that tells you information about your program. This command is discussed below.

About

The About window shows you how many quotes you have downloaded this month, your Quote Monkey Deluxe version number, other things you may need to know, and, a picture of the wise old monkey. The About window is shown below.

Studies

This section discusses the various studies that can be placed on Quote MonkeyDeluxe charts. In this section you will find a description of each study, along with an explanation of any parameters the study may need, and a description of the study’s parameter entry window.

Accumulation / Distribution

Accumulation / Distribution displays the flow of volume into or out of a security. This study takes no parameters. The only item on it’s parameter window (shown below) is to select the color of the line for the study.

To place the study on the chart, select the line color and press the OK button.

Bid / Ask Lines

This study provides you with a way to show bid and ask prices on a chart by placing an envelope if the prices on the chart. It’s analysis value is probably negligible. This study takes no parameters. The only item on it’s parameter window (shown below) is to select the color of the lines for the study.

To place the study on the chart, select the line color and press the OK button.

Bid / Ask Spread

This study provides you with a way to show bid and ask prices on a chart by placing ticks at the prices on the chart. The ask price is represented by an up tick, while the bid is shown as a down tick. The base of the ticks sit on the actual price. It’s analysis value is probably negligible. This study takes no parameters. The only item on it’s parameter window (shown below) is to select the color of the ticks for the study.

To place the study on the chart, select the tick color and press the OK button.

Bollinger Bands

Created by John Bollinger, these are a popular form of trading band or envelope that are based on price volatility. The bands will expand and contract according to market forces and, theoretically, be more accurate than standard envelopes.

These bands use a standard deviation above and below a moving average (usually two points of deviation). The default is a twenty-period moving average.

As with standard envelopes, over-bought conditions occur at the upper band and over-sold at the lower band.

This study requires two parameters. The first is the number of periods in the moving average, the second is a multiplier that expands the standard deviation envelope.

The study’s parameter screen is shown below.

The upper portion of the window controls the display and parameters for the moving average portion of the plot. Using the buttons in the Plot box, select whether you want the moving average line plotted or not, and then select the color for the line. The Periods box controls the number of periods used to calculate the moving average. Mr. Bollinger recommends a default 20 periods and notes that an entry of less than 10 does not work very well. In the Bands portion of the window you select the color of the standard deviation bands and the expansion multiplier. The study works best with the default multiplier of 2. After you have made any changes to the default settings that are needed, press the OK button to plot the study.
